History of fluoride

Grand Rapids, Michigan, became the first city in the United States to fluoridate the community’s water supply in the 1940s. Several conspiracy theories arose in the years that followed, including speculation of a plot to impose a communist regime in the country.

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral in food, water, and soil, and it’s also an essential ingredient in gels and varnishes used in mouthwashes and toothpaste.

Some believe fluoride is dangerous to your health. They think it causes osteosarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer, in boys under 19. But neither Health Canada nor the FDA have found evidence of a connection between water fluoridation and cancer.

How fluoride works

Certain foods create bacteria that live in your mouth. The bacteria produce an acid that causes the calcium, phosphate, and enamel to be stripped away from your teeth.
